Initiated in response to 2006 having been a huge year for the Gay, Bi, Lesbian and Transgender (“GBLT”) calendar, a group was formed in Wellington & Christchurch named the Gay Blacks. This group includes those interested in attending sports and cultural events in New Zealand and around the world. The first major events were travelling to the Gay Games, Chicago and Outgames, Montreal in July/August 2006. The Gay Games and Cultural festival has been held every four years since the first games in San Francisco in 1982, with the last Gay Games being held in Sydney. The key emphasis for the games is on participation and inclusion. Two weeks after Chicago, Montreal will also host an international games and cultural event called the "Out Games". Both these games will provide an opportunity to compete at international level where the emphasis is on participation and personal best.
